Dunmore East: A Fishing Village That Earns Its Reputation
Dunmore East is a fishing village on the mouth of Waterford Harbour, 15 kilometres from the city. It is built on sandstone cliffs with coves and beaches between them. The harbour is still a working fishing port. The clifftop walk connects the village's two beaches and passes through woodland with views across to Hook Head.
This is not a hidden gem - Waterford locals have known about it for generations - but it remains genuinely unspoilt. The village is small enough to walk in 20 minutes end to end. The seafood is fresh because the boats are right there. And County Waterford has one of the prettiest coastal villages in the southeast sitting quietly 15 minutes from the city.
What to Expect
The harbour is the centre of village life. Fishing boats tie up alongside pleasure craft. The fish shop at the harbour sells whatever came in that morning. The Strand Inn and the other harbour pubs fill up on summer evenings with a mix of locals, Waterford day-trippers, and visitors who found this place by accident and keep coming back.
The clifftop walk from the harbour to Counsellor's Strand is the main draw. It runs through mature woodland above the cliffs, with viewpoints over hidden coves and across the harbour mouth to Hook Head. The path is well maintained but not sanitised - tree roots, mud after rain, the occasional scramble. It takes about 30 minutes each way.
The beaches are small and sheltered. Counsellor's Strand is the main one - sandy, backed by cliffs, with steps down from the road. Ladies' Cove is smaller and more private. The swimming is good in summer, though the water is bracing year-round.
The honest negative: Dunmore East is tiny and on a wet Tuesday in November there is not much to do beyond a pint by the fire. In summer, the village's single main road gets congested and parking at the harbour becomes a genuine battle. The restaurants are good but options are limited - if your first choice is full, your second choice might be too. Book ahead on summer weekends.
How to Get There
Dunmore East is 15 kilometres south of Waterford city. The drive takes about 20 minutes on the R684. From Tramore, it is about 25 minutes along the coast road.
There is a limited bus service from Waterford but a car is the practical option. The road into the village is straightforward but parking fills quickly in summer. Arrive before midday on sunny weekends.
Where to Stay Nearby
Dunmore East has limited accommodation. Most visitors stay in Waterford city and drive down. For an overnight, the village has a couple of options worth knowing about.
On the cliff edge with views that justify every cent. Michelin-starred restaurant, infinity pool looking out at the Celtic Sea. Worth the drive from Waterford.
